Presents:

Beyond the Narrative: Understanding and Applying Written Exposure Therapy for PTSD

(Pre-Recorded, Available On Demand until 10.31.26!)

Please join Jason Swain for the October 2026 RECORDED CE!

Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a brief, evidence-based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that has demonstrated outcomes comparable to longer trauma-focused interventions while requiring only five therapy sessions and minimal homework. As research continues to support its effectiveness across military, first responder, and civilian populations, WET has become an increasingly valuable treatment option for clinicians seeking efficient, evidence-based approaches to trauma care.

This presentation moves beyond simply teaching a treatment protocol to examine the historical development, scientific foundations, and clinical application of Written Exposure Therapy. Participants will explore the evolution of exposure-based treatments, the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms underlying therapeutic writing, and the growing body of research supporting WET. The course will provide a detailed review of the five-session protocol, compare WET with other evidence-based PTSD treatments including Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and discuss practical considerations for client selection, treatment planning, and implementation.

Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of not only how to deliver Written Exposure Therapy, but also why it works, when it is most appropriate, and how to thoughtfully integrate it into evidence-based trauma practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the historical evolution of exposure-based therapies and the development of Written Exposure Therapy for PTSD.
  2. Explain the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms believed to contribute to the effectiveness of Written Exposure Therapy.
  3. Summarize the current evidence supporting Written Exposure Therapy, including findings from randomized controlled trials and comparative effectiveness research.
  4. Differentiate Written Exposure Therapy from Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), including indications, advantages, and limitations.
  5. Identify appropriate client selection criteria, contraindications, and implementation considerations for Written Exposure Therapy.
  6. Apply the five-session Written Exposure Therapy protocol with fidelity while incorporating sound clinical judgment and evidence-based decision-making.
  7. Integrate Written Exposure Therapy into clinical practice through case conceptualization, documentation strategies, and treatment planning.

This is a pre-recorded presentation, which you will receive access to once you have registered. Information will be sent via your registration email, including the video link, quiz link, and handouts. Please complete the quiz included in your registration email by no later than 5pm on October 31st, 2026 to receive your CE certificate. CE certificates will be sent automatically when you complete and pass the quiz (8/10 correct). You may take the quiz as many times is necessary to pass.
